The Early Years

Burton Stephen Lancaster was born on November 2, 1913, in New York City. His parents, James and Elizabeth Lancaster, were working-class immigrants from Ireland. Lancaster grew up in a tough neighborhood and often got into fights. He dropped out of high school and worked a variety of jobs before becoming a circus acrobat.

In 1941, Lancaster was drafted into the Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery. After the war, Lancaster returned to New York City and began his acting career.

The Rise to Stardom

Lancaster's first major film role was in the 1946 film, The Killers. He quickly became one of Hollywood's most popular leading men, starring in such classics as From Here to Eternity (1953),Marty (1955),and Elmer Gantry (1960).

Lancaster was known for his rugged good looks, his intense acting style, and his willingness to take on challenging roles. He was also a pioneer in the field of independent filmmaking. In 1960, he co-founded the production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which produced such films as Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and The Leopard (1963).

The Later Years

Lancaster continued to act throughout the 1970s and 1980s, but his career began to decline in the 1990s. He died of a heart attack on October 20, 1994, at the age of 80.
