Early Life

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. His father was a wool weaver, and his mother was a homemaker. Columbus had two brothers, Bartolomeo and Giacomo. As a young man, Columbus worked as a sailor and a merchant. He also studied geography and navigation.

Voyages to the Americas

In 1492, Columbus set out from Spain on a voyage to find a new route to Asia. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean for two months before reaching the Bahamas. Columbus believed that he had reached Asia, and he named the islands the Indies. He then explored the Caribbean Sea, discovering Cuba and Hispaniola.

Columbus made three more voyages to the Americas. On his second voyage, he founded the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, at Santo Domingo on Hispaniola. On his third voyage, he explored the coast of South America. On his fourth voyage, he explored the coast of Central America.

Legacy

Christopher Columbus's voyages had a profound impact on the world. They led to the colonization of the Americas by Europeans, which had a devastating impact on the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Columbus's voyages also opened up new trade routes between Europe and the Americas, and they helped to spread European culture and technology to the New World.

Columbus's legacy is complex and controversial. He is celebrated as a great explorer, but he is also criticized for his role in the colonization of the Americas. However, there is no doubt that Columbus's voyages were a turning point in world history.
