Michael Paul was born in 1921, the son of King Carol II and Queen Helen. He became king in 1940, at the age of 19, following the abdication of his father. Romania was then in the midst of World War II, and Michael Paul was forced to navigate the country through a difficult period.

In 1944, Michael Paul led a coup d'état that overthrew the pro-Nazi government of Ion Antonescu. He then declared war on Germany and joined the Allies. Romania played a significant role in the defeat of Nazi Germany, and Michael Paul was hailed as a hero.

After the war, Michael Paul was forced to abdicate by the communist government. He went into exile in Switzerland, where he lived for the rest of his life. He died in 2017, at the age of 96.
