Servants and Employers in Zambia, 1900-1985: The Anthropology of Contemporary is a groundbreaking study of the relationship between servants and employers in Zambia during the colonial period and after independence. Based on extensive fieldwork and archival research, the book provides a rich and nuanced account of the ways in which this relationship has shaped Zambian society and culture.
The book begins by examining the historical roots of the servant-employer relationship in Zambia. It shows how this relationship was shaped by the colonial economy, which relied on the labor of African servants. The book then goes on to examine the ways in which the servant-employer relationship changed after independence. It shows how the new Zambian government sought to promote equality between servants and employers, but also how the legacy of colonialism continued to shape the relationship.
The book concludes by arguing that the servant-employer relationship is a key lens through which to understand Zambian society and culture. It shows how this relationship has shaped the ways in which Zambians think about work, class, and inequality. The book also provides a valuable contribution to the wider literature on the anthropology of work and employment.
