The indomitable spirit of an ordinary woman who became an extraordinary trailblazer for civil rights.

A Daughter of the South

Rosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her parents were sharecroppers who instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep sense of justice.

Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Rosa was exposed to the harsh realities of racial segregation. She attended segregated schools and was often subjected to discrimination. However, she refused to let prejudice define her.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott

In 1955, Rosa Parks made history by refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus to a white man. Her act of defiance was a catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a year-long protest that challenged the city's segregation laws.

Rosa Parks' courage inspired thousands of other African Americans to join the boycott. Together, they marched, boycotted, and peacefully protested until the city buses were desegregated.
