Looking for a fun and easy knitting project? This swirl sack hat pattern is perfect for beginners and experienced knitters alike. The unique swirl stitch creates a beautiful texture that is sure to turn heads. And the best part is, this hat can be made in any size, from baby to adult.

In this pattern, you will learn how to:

  • Cast on stitches
  • Knit in the round
  • Increase and decrease stitches
  • Bind off stitches

Materials

  • Medium-weight yarn (worsted weight)
  • US size 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles, 16" or 24" long
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

  • 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Sizes

  • Baby (0-3 months): 14" circumference
  • Toddler (3-6 months): 16" circumference
  • Child (6-12 months): 18" circumference
  • Adult (small): 20" circumference
  • Adult (medium): 22" circumference
  • Adult (large): 24" circumference

Instructions

  1. Cast on 96 stitches onto your circular needles. Join the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  2. Knit 2 rows in stockinette stitch (knit every round).
  3. Begin the swirl stitch pattern:
    • Row 1: *K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2*
    • Row 2: *P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2*
    • Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the hat measures 6 inches from the cast-on edge.
  4. Decrease stitches:
    • Row 1: *K2tog, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2*
    • Row 2: *P2, K2tog, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2*
    • Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 72 stitches remaining.
  5. Continue knitting in the swirl stitch pattern until the hat measures 8 inches from the cast-on edge.
  6. Decrease stitches again:
    • Row 1: *K2tog, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2*
    • Row 2: *P2, K2tog, P2, K2, P2*
    • Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 48 stitches remaining.
  7. Continue knitting in the swirl stitch pattern until the hat measures 10 inches from the cast-on edge.
  8. Bind off all stitches.

Finishing

  1. Weave in any loose ends.
  2. Fold the brim of the hat up about 1 inch and sew it in place.
  3. Add a pompom or other embellishment to the top of the hat, if desired.

Congratulations! You have now finished knitting a beautiful swirl sack hat. This hat is perfect for keeping your head warm and stylish all winter long. Enjoy!
