John McCloy's remarkable life spanned much of the 20th century and intersected with some of its most momentous events. He served as Assistant Secretary of War during World War II, played a key role in the Nuremberg Trials, and later served as President of the World Bank. He was also a close adviser to several presidents, from Franklin Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy.

Early Life and Education

John McCloy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1895. His father was a wealthy businessman, and McCloy attended the prestigious Groton School and Yale University. After graduating from Yale in 1916, he served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

World War II

In 1940, McCloy was appointed Assistant Secretary of War. In this role, he played a key role in mobilizing the American economy for the war effort. He also helped to coordinate the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944.

The Nuremberg Trials

After the war, McCloy served as the U.S. High Commissioner for Germany. In this role, he helped to oversee the denazification of Germany and the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The World Bank

In 1947, McCloy was appointed President of the World Bank. In this role, he helped to rebuild the war-torn economies of Europe and Asia.

Later Life

After leaving the World Bank in 1962, McCloy continued to serve as an adviser to presidents and other world leaders. He also played a leading role in the Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank that has been influential in American foreign policy.

John McCloy died in New York City in 1989. He was 94 years old.
