Haj Amin Al Hussaini, The Grand Mufti Of Jerusalem And Leader Of The Palestinian National Movement The Grand Mufti: Haj Amin Al Hussaini Founder Of The Palestinian National Movement

Haj Amin Al Hussaini was a prominent Palestinian Arab religious leader, nationalist, and politician who served as the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem from 1921 to 1936.

He is considered one of the most influential figures in the early Palestinian national movement and played a key role in shaping the Palestinian struggle for independence from British rule.

Early Life

Amin al-Hussaini was born in Jerusalem in 1895 to a prominent Palestinian family.

He studied Islamic law at Al-Azhar University in Cairo and returned to Jerusalem in 1918 to serve as a religious judge.

In 1921, he was appointed Grand Mufti of Jerusalem by the British authorities, a position that gave him considerable authority over the religious and political affairs of the Palestinian community.

Arab Revolt

In 1936, Al-Hussaini played a leading role in the Arab Revolt against British rule in Palestine.

He was one of the main organizers of the revolt and called for a general strike and armed resistance against the British.

The revolt was eventually crushed by the British, but it marked a turning point in the Palestinian national movement.

Grand Mufti in Exile

After the failure of the Arab Revolt, Al-Hussaini fled to Iraq, where he continued to lead the Palestinian national movement.

He established the Arab Higher Committee, which served as a government-in-exile for the Palestinians.

In 1941, he moved to Nazi Germany, where he collaborated with the Nazis in their propaganda efforts against the Allies.

Post-World War II

After the war, Al-Hussaini was tried in absentia for war crimes by the French and sentenced to death.

He remained in exile until his death in Beirut in 1974.

Legacy

Haj Amin Al Hussaini is considered a controversial figure in Palestinian history.

He was a strong advocate for Palestinian independence, but he also collaborated with the Nazis during World War II.

Despite his flaws, he remains a significant figure in the Palestinian national movement and his legacy is still debated today.
