Born in Sandersville, Georgia, in 1897, Elijah Muhammad was raised in a deeply religious household. He claimed to have received divine revelations from Allah in the 1930s, which led him to establish the Nation of Islam. The sect's ideology was based on the belief that white people were devils who had oppressed black people for centuries. Muhammad preached that black people should establish their own independent nation and reject the evils of white society.

Muhammad's message resonated with many African Americans who were disillusioned with the lack of progress towards racial equality in the United States. The Nation of Islam quickly gained followers, and Muhammad became a powerful and influential figure in the black community.

However, Muhammad's teachings were also controversial. He advocated for black separatism, which some saw as divisive and counterproductive. He also made anti-Semitic and homophobic statements, which alienated many people.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Nation of Islam became increasingly militant. Muhammad's son, Malcolm X, was a prominent member of the sect and a vocal advocate for violence against white people. The Nation of Islam's involvement in the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965 further damaged its reputation.

Elijah Muhammad died in 1975, and his legacy remains complex and contested. He was a powerful and influential figure who played a significant role in the civil rights movement. However, his teachings were also divisive and controversial. The Nation of Islam continues to exist today, but it is a much smaller and less influential organization than it was during Muhammad's lifetime.

The life of Elijah Muhammad is a fascinating and complex story. He was a controversial figure who preached a message of black separatism and self-reliance. His teachings had a profound impact on the African American community during the turbulent mid-20th century. Muhammad's legacy remains complex and contested, but there is no doubt that he was a powerful and influential figure in American history.
