Monica Loughman was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1933. She began studying ballet at the age of seven, and by the time she was 16, she had joined the Royal Ballet School in London. Loughman quickly rose through the ranks of the Royal Ballet, and in 1954, she became a principal dancer. She danced with the Royal Ballet for 12 years, during which time she created many iconic roles, including Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and Giselle in Giselle.

In 1966, Loughman joined the American Ballet Theatre. She danced with ABT for 10 years, during which time she created several more iconic roles, including Kitri in Don Quixote and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Loughman retired from ABT in 1976, but she continued to dance as a guest artist with companies around the world.
