Born in 1926, Starzl grew up in Iowa and developed a passion for medicine at a young age. He attended medical school at Northwestern University and completed his residency at the University of Colorado. In 1962, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, where he would make his groundbreaking discovery.

At the time, liver disease was a major cause of death in infants. The only hope for these children was a liver transplant, but the surgery was extremely risky and often unsuccessful. Starzl and his team set out to find a way to improve the survival rate of liver transplant patients.

After years of research, Starzl made a breakthrough discovery. He found that by using a donor liver from a deceased person, he could significantly improve the survival rate of liver transplant patients. This discovery revolutionized the field of organ transplantation and saved the lives of millions of babies.

In this memoir, Starzl tells the story of his groundbreaking discovery and the impact it has had on the world. He also shares his insights on the ethical issues surrounding organ transplantation and the importance of organ donation.

Doctor Donor is a fascinating and inspiring story of a pioneering surgeon who saved the lives of millions of babies. It is a must-read for anyone interested in medicine, science, or the human spirit.
