Celebrate the African American holiday of Kwanzaa with this beautiful pictureback book by Constanze von Kitzing. Learn about the history, traditions, and symbols of Kwanzaa, and enjoy the vibrant illustrations that bring the holiday to life.

Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday that is celebrated from December 26th to January 1st. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to celebrate African American culture and heritage. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits." Kwanzaa is a time to reflect on the past year, to celebrate the accomplishments of the community, and to look forward to the future.

The seven principles of Kwanzaa are:

  • Umoja (Unity)
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
  • Nia (Purpose)
  • Kuumba (Creativity)
  • Imani (Faith)

Each day of Kwanzaa, a candle is lit on the kinara, a special candleholder. The candles represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa. On the first day, the black candle in the center of the kinara is lit. This candle represents umoja, or unity. On the second day, the red candle to the left of the black candle is lit. This candle represents kujichagulia, or self-determination. And so on, until all seven candles are lit on the seventh day of Kwanzaa.

In addition to lighting the candles, families often gather to share meals, sing songs, and tell stories. Kwanzaa is a time to celebrate African American culture and heritage, and to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future.
